Atunbi Toyosi: A Rudderless Ship

Are You like a rudderless ship?

A man without purpose is like a ship without a rudder- Thomas Carlyle

There are some words we often use without thinking deeply about their actual meaning- well, till perhaps our attention is drawn to it. You will agree with me that the word ‘purpose’ is one of these words. It is a seven letter word ladden with a huge meaning. A realization of the meaning of the word would make a man’s life on earth fulfilling. Purpose is the reason for which something exists or is made, used or done. It is the intended or desired result, goal or aim of a thing.

In our present generation, so much is being said about ‘purpose’. Until you get to that point in your life when you realize the need to know the actual reason for your existence, you are just like a ship without a rudder or an aeroplane without a compass.

I have a lecturer that loves to use analogies a lot. He says that when you board the right aeroplane, you will land at the appropriate airport. I would say that when you discover your purpose, you will land at your appropriate destination in life.

The best way to know the purpose of thing is to ask the inventor: God! God was thinking of you ever before you thought of Him. His purpose for you predates your conception. He planned it without your input. You don’t get to choose your purpose and your purpose will not conflict with God’s word.

For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorizes; all things were created by Him and for Him- Colossians 1:16.

To fulfill the purpose God made you for, you will have to challenge conventional wisdom and whatever the world requires of you that are not in line with the word of God. Doing this is of utmost importance especially with the present situation of the world and Nigeria in particular where everything seems to have gone wrong. The slogan is, ‘if you cannot beat them, then you join them’.

As children of the Almighty God, created to fulfill purpose on earth which ultimately is to glorify Him, we are to standout. Standing out includes those very little things like not jumping queue, not signing attendance for an absent person, writing the exact time you arrived at work, not reducing your age in order to get a job, obeying simple rules and regulations (which are in place to make life very easy for us) and the list goes on.

God is an orderly God and His original plan was to have an orderly world. Yes the world is bad and things have gone all wrong but we in our little corner are to fulfil the intent of our Father by doing things the right way. The change to the wrong situation of things should start with you. Yes! You! The ultimate goal of the universe is to show the glory of God. The Lord has made everything for His own purpose-Proverbs 16:4 and since this is the case, every reason for which he created us has to align with His intention.

I would conclude by saying that Jesus glorified God by fulfilling his purpose on earth; you should do likewise. So, stop procrastinating or arguing if you already know the reason for your existence. If you do not know yet, as was earlier stated, ask God! Know that you can hasten the answer as long as you do not despise the source, which is God. You will love the result. Have a fulfilling life.
