Arthur Malcolm Stace was an Australian reformed alcoholic who converted to Christianity and spread the gospel by writing the word “Eternity” in chalk on footpaths in Sydney over a period of approximately, 35 years!
This innovation was inspired by the preaching of Evangelist John G. Ridley on “The Echoes of Eternity” from Isaiah 57:17. Ridley’s words, “Eternity, Eternity, I wish that I could sound or shout that word to everyone in the streets of Sydney. You’ve got to meet it, where will you spend Eternity?” proved crucial in Stace’s decision to tell others about his faith. In an interview, Stace said, “Eternity went ringing through my brain and suddenly I began crying and felt a powerful call from the Lord to write Eternity.” Even though he was illiterate and could hardly write his own name Arthur, legibly, “the word ‘Eternity’ came out smoothly, in a beautiful copperplate script. I couldn’t understand it, and I still can’t.”
As a tribute to the man known as Mr Eternity, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit up with the word “Eternity” as part of the celebrations for the beginning of the year 2000. Arthur discovered a way to make God famous!
The primary assignment of every Christian- in fact, the primary reason for the creation of man is to make God famous- to spread and extend His Kingdom throughout the earth. God is a king. He has a Kingdom and His plan is to reproduce His influence in the colony of the Earth. That was why he made man.
God is not in need of fame. He is not unpopular or insecure. It is man who needs to make God famous because that is why he was created. Man is fully and truly fulfilled when He takes a stand and makes a difference for God’s Kingdom.
Arthur Malcolm Stace found how to make God famous when he yielded to the instruction to write “Eternity” all over Sydney. He found a purpose to live for. Your Purpose is your God-Intended Avenue to establish His Kingdom on earth and enforce His will on this side of eternity. You have a sphere of influence which God has assigned to you.
We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but according to the measure of the area of ministry that God has assigned to us, which reaches even to you. (2 Cor 10:13-14 HCSB.)
God has assigned to you a sphere of influence either by virtue of your experiences, background, your academic qualifications or even your gifts and talents. You need to take over your area of ministry. Stop comparing yourself with others. Take a stand, be different and make a difference.
Mark Twain once shared a story in which a man died and met Saint Peter at the gates of Heaven. Immediately realizing that St. Peter was a wise and knowledgeable individual, the man asked, “Saint Peter, I have been interested in military history for many years. Tell me, who was the greatest General of all time?”
Saint Peter quickly responded, “Oh, that’s a simple question. It’s that man right over there”.
“You must be mistaken,” responded the man, now very confused. “I knew that man on earth and he was just a common labourer”
“That’s right my friend” assured St Peter. “He would have been the greatest General of all time, if he had been a General!”
Do not let that happen to you! Live the life you were created to live. Let God open your eyes to the assigned spot for your life and begin to see yourself as you could be and do everything under God’s grace to maximise your potentials by taking a stand, being different and making your Creator famous!
