In Your Road Map for Success, John Maxwell recognises the difficulty people had with defining success- something they wanted very badly- and offers to define it as knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential and sowing seeds that benefit others. Success he says, is not a destination but a journey.
It is my opinion that life itself is a journey for which we need a map to help us navigate through the many paths. We need something like a compass to travel through life and I believe God the source of Life offers His Word as our best bet for such a task.
The Word of God is His provision to help us through life. It contains God’s road map for life. Without it we cannot find our ways. But what do we do with the Word? What should be our attitude to the word?
I want to share, briefly, 7 things I believe we should do with the Word as we go in 2015 and in our life journey.
1. Read the Word.
Our first and basic responsibility towards the Word is to read it. Without reading the Word, we cannot know what it says. Men who have walked the way made the Word a companion as they journeyed, reading it. We must too. If we claim to believe the bible “from cover to cover,” we must also read it from cover to cover!
We can’t watch television for three hours and read the Bible for three minutes and expect to grow! -Rick Warren
2. Study the Word.
It is not enough to read the Word, we must go ahead to study it. Paul of Tarsus instructs his spiritual son, Timothy to be committed to studying. (2 Tim. 2:15)
Our Study of the Word must be deliberate and personal. This takes time but it’s a process that makes us better.
3. Memorize the Word
Memorizing the Word used to be part of growing up in church. For some, it still is but for many others, it is almost like a chore. But we must commit to knowing the Word by heart. King David said his secret to living above sin was to hide the Word in His heart.
Memorizing the Word helps you resist temptation, make wise decisions, offer good advice and build your faith.
4. Think the Word.
Joshua was taking over from Moses who had died and God gave him the rules by which he could be successful in his assignment.
Constantly remind the people about these laws, and you yourself must think about them every day and every night so that you will be sure to obey all of them. For only then will you succeed. Josh 1:8 TLB
Thinking and meditating on the Word is key to success in the journey of life. God says you can prosper your ways by meditating and doing the Word. If you can worry, you can meditate!
5. Pray (Confess) the Word.
Confessing what the Word says is very important to building your faith and staying on top of life’s situations. You must choose to speak the Word and nothing else no matter what happens. If you believe God’s Word, speak it. Pray it. Confess it. Like John, we must confess not only what God says we are, but also what God says we are not.(John 1:20)
6. Obey the Word
This is the most important thing to do with God’s Word. Without obedience to God’s Word, every other thing we do with it is useless. Apostle James says it is foolish to hear the Word and not do it!
And remember, it is a message to obey, not just to listen to. So don’t fool yourselves. James 1:22 TLB
You do not actually believe any part of the Bible unless you do it. In 2015 and beyond, we must be doers of the Word!
7. Teach the Word.
When must learn to not just read, study, memorize, meditate or obey. We must also teach it. Sharing the Word keeps us accountable and turns us into blessings for others.
You were not created to be a dam. Rather, God wants you to be a channel. Let God use you to impart knowledge in 2015!
I once read that Life for us, takes place in a world full of knowns and unknowns, answers and mysteries, beliefs and doubts, myths and rumours, the mundane and the days of storm. As we journey through life, we experience the same things – we love, we fear, we hope, we dream, we face tragedy and personal defeat.
Your lifetime is a journey. You have a destination with a path that leads there. You cannot afford to be confused. Neither can you be roaming about on a cruise to nowhere. You need God’s Word as your signpost, life-map, direction, insurance with a lifetime guarantee. The word warns of danger, directs you to hidden treasures. Without the Word, you cannot find the way.
