THE PLANK VERSUS SPECK THEORY

You were created to solve a problem or advance a cause. God would not have planned for your birth if he did not have a need for another human.

The first man was created in response to a need for a representative of God, the King of Heaven on Earth. God had first created the heaven and the earth. The heaven became the King’s palace and the earth kept for a future use as a colony of heaven. The earth suffered under the reign of the terror of the fallen angel. God came to her rescue and after six days of putting things in order, God knew there will be no much difference if He left the scene without putting in power, a carrier of His breath- an ambassador of His Kingdom.

Thus, Adam was created and empowered to enforce the King’s reign on earth. Just like the first man, every human being is created and empowered in response to a need. Solving the problem you were sent here to solve will put the earth in order and establish God’s Kingdom in your sphere of influence. This is the only true source of fulfilment.

Irrespective of the circumstances surrounding your birth, you were created for a purpose and you have the potentials to fulfil that purpose and give God pleasure. It is very unfortunate that several people have become part of the problem they were called to solve.

So, how can you be a solution for your world and not become part of the problem?

I believe the first victory you must have is not the problem in your society. The first problem you must solve is the problem with yourself. There can be no public problem solving unless you have conquered yourself.

“He quoted a proverb: “‘Can a blind man guide a blind man?’ Wouldn’t they both end up in the ditch?”  Luke 6:39 MSG

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Luke 6:41-42 NIV

The problem created with your desire to remove the speck in your neighbour’s eye is not whether or not the desire is good but that you yourself cannot see clearly due to the plank in your own eyes. So, how can you be of help?

Personal victory is a criteria for being a solution to other people’s problems. The first point of call in becoming the solution to a problem is you.

Steve Covey in his bestselling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, shared the story of how he and his wife attempted to help their son overcome his social and emotional issues but failed. After several attempts, he concluded that their inability to help the boy was not because of a problem with the boy, but because they had conflicting perceptions about him. Until they worked on their attitude and behaviour, their efforts were ineffective.

It is hypocrisy that makes us want to first solve the problem we see in others without first checking ourselves.

“If we want to change a situation, we must first change ourselves.” Steve R. Covey

The traits that bother us in others are often the habits we dislike in ourselves. This is why your biggest personal challenges may be the problem you were created to solve.

Personal victory is more difficult than public victory. Jesus likened the problem with us to a plank compared to the problem with others- a speck. The challenge of public victory is just a “speck” compared to the challenge of a “plank” in our personal victories. This difference explains why we have a lot of people parading themselves as the solution to the problems but who have not solved the problem beginning from themselves. Personal victory is more difficult than public victory!

The reason why there are a lot of problems in our society is not because there are no people to solve those problems, it is that these people have not yet conquered the problem in themselves.
What problem do you believe God has called you to solve? What sphere of influence has God put you in to establish His Kingdom on earth? If you are going to effect any change, the change must begin with you!

  1. “The first problem you must solve is the problem with yourself.”
We spend so much time trying to remove the speck in others’ eyes! Not that we shouldn’t offer guidance or direction or correction, but I guess we should do so with ‘fear & trembling’ knowing that we are blindsided by our plank! I like to think that if we spend a good deal of time focusing on ourselves, we can influence others by our example.

As always, I learn something when I come here. Thanks.

    1. Your comment is very insightful. Yes if we spend good time on ourselves, we do our society a lot more good than we run around looking for the wrong in others. Thanks for reading and commenting Timi!
