If you have been following this blog for a while, you should have noticed the recurrent use of words like Purpose and Potential. Well, these are the two concepts this blog is about.
I believe you are not on earth by accident. The Creator planned your conception for a purpose and until you find that purpose, life really would not make much sense. One of the deepest needs of any man is the need for significance. We want to be affirmed. We want to be attached to success.
The Creator’s solution to this need is in His Purpose for every man. To our search for significance the Creator says, “There is a purpose for your life. When you find that purpose you have found significance”. The discovery of your purpose makes you realize one thing that only you were made to do. If you don’t do it, no one else will. Maybe God will raise someone else in a later date, but you would have left a vacuum. Your Purpose gives you a platform of influence in God’s plans for the universe. How better significant can you be?
It is also my conviction that for the fulfilment of your Purpose, God has given you great potentials. Scriptures talk about the beauty of God in every man. I believe that is about the marvellously great potentials buried in each of us and with which we have been equipped to fulfil purpose. Our assignment on earth is to live fully and to die empty! Your value is defined by your potential.
One of the greatest tragedies in life is to watch potentials die untapped. Thus, I want to share briefly 4 stages of releasing your potentials and dying empty. They are gotten from the story of Lazarus’ return to life recorded in the 11th chapter of John’s Gospel.
[Like Jesus said about Lazarus’ sickness, you may be going through a hard time right now. I want to encourage you that it is for the revelation of the glory of God buried in you. If you have invited Jesus to visit you, be sure, your sickness is not unto death but unto the release of something wonderful]
Stage #1: Buried and Decaying…
It is said that the richest place in the world is not the oil wells of Nigeria or the diamond mines of South Africa but the cemetery. For buried in the cemetery are books that were never written, dreams that never came to pass, songs that were never produced, inventions that were never designed… the list is endless. The cemetery is rich! But before the potentials migrated to the graveyards, they were buried in living beings, walking in the space of a lifetime!
Lazarus had died. He had been buried for four days and John reports that the body was already decaying. For so many of us, just like Lazarus, our potentials have remained buried inside of us and for some of us in fact, our potentials are decaying. This stage is the natural stage. We all enter the Earth with buried potentials. But unfortunately, many never leave this stage. To remain at this stage is a tragedy. This is the stage of “can be.” You must make sure the story does not become “should have been.”
Stage #2: Roll away the stone!
The first thing to do about your hidden potential is to unhide them. You must understand the tremendous potentials you possess and commit yourself to maximizing them in your lifetime. You must make efforts at self-discovery starting with the God-discovery. Your potentials are related to your Source. God is your source; you must therefore establish a working relationship with Him. It is in His Word that we have the Life-light.
Stage #3: The Calling Forth: He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
This is the stage of Purpose Discovery. You must discover the purpose of your existence so that you can be guided to make demands on your potentials to call them forth. Your potentials require responsibility to expose their possibilities. It is in the pursuit of your purpose that such responsibilities are kept. Through the discovery of your Purpose, your passions are utilized as the energy for the release of your potentials. Your potentials can be released and maximised only if you find the Purpose of your life.
Stage #4: Loosing and Letting go
“And he came out, a cadaver, wrapped from head to toe, and with a kerchief over his face. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him loose.”
When through the pursuit of your purpose, you begin to make demands on your potentials, they are expressed raw with plenty rooms for growth. Your impact is still limited. You may fail sometimes. You may succeed many times; but you have the responsibility to let your potentials loose. Unwrap your potentials. Develop them. No matter what greatness you have achieved, you can get better. Potential always gets better. At this last stage, you must continue to prune and refine your potentials to get better. You must let them flow out of you unwrapped and developed to enrich your generation.
Potential + Refinement = Impact.
You may want to find people who can help you grow better. Refine your potential. You can always be better!
I want to end this by saying there’s a wealth of potential in you. It is your responsibility to roll away the stone that hides your potentials, call them forth and be committed to unwrapping and developing your gifts. You must decide if you are going to rob the world or bless it with the rich, valuable, potent but untapped resources locked away within you. Let me ask you in the words of Dr Myles Munroe, “What would the world have lost if you had not been born?”
